Katrīna Gaidule and Roberts Reinis Buncis from Latvia wins WCT Latvian Mixed Doubles Curling Cup I of season 2025/2026 – CONGRATULATIONS!
There were teams from Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Chech Republic, South Korea and Sweden in the field. All teams were divided in 3 groups and after round-robin games best two teams from each group and best 2 out of third places kept fighting for the podium.
K.Gaidule / R.R.Buncis (LAT 5) finished round-robin with a loss to South Korea team A.Kim/E.Shin and earned the spot in the quarter-final. Latvian team won A.Rykove / K.Rykov (LTU) in the quarter-final with results 13:5. K.Gaidule / R.R.Buncis played semi-final against another team from Latvia D.Regža / A.Regža. Katrīna and Roberts controlled the second part of the game and won it after 6 ends with the score 11:4. In the final the Latvian team met against team from Norway. After 7 ends S.Hausstätter/S.Svorkmo-Lundberg was leading 9 points to 4. After unsuccessful shots and bad decision in the eight end from Norway side Latvians managed to score big 5 points and got to the extra end. Roberts and Katrīna made perfect 2 draws in the beginning of an extra end but Norwegians couldn’t get over 5 point loss quickly and were not so precisely in their draws. So K.Gaidule / R.R.Buncis manage to keep their 2 stones safe until the last shot in the extra end and won the final by 11:9.
After the final game Katrīna Gaidule : “Thanks to opponents! We had really great games, especially final. Thank you organizers for organizing this event! It was really great to be here. It’s great to play at home. Thank you to ice makers – the ice was great! Time keepers as well – thank you! It was overall a great tournament!”
Game for bronze was also interesting. Latvian team D.Regža / A.Regža manage to score big 6 points in the first end. But South Korea A.Kim/E.Shin managed to get back and after five games they had a small advantage 7:6. Latvians tied the game 7:7. But in the last seventh end South Korea scored another 3 points and won the game.
Good luck for all teams in the National championships and all the rest of the season! Safe trip home to everybody!
